This is the story of Maria Lauterbach, who was murdered at the hands of a fellow Marine, Cesar Laurean. This CRUE TRIME took place in my hometown of Jacksonville, NC - home of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
I remember following this story as it played out in real time - first Maria went missing, then the remains were found, then Cesar was on the run, then the dramatic capture and extradition, and finally - closure.
I'm sharing this story today to remind people that things aren't always what they seem. The golden child at work sometimes has a lot to hide, and the problem child is sometimes just caught in a bad situation. It's easy to assume the worst in people, or get caught up in gossip - good and bad.
