Darshan Thogudeep Supreme Court | Notices To Darshan, Pavitra, State Govt In Renukaswamy Murder Case

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Kannada actors Darshan Thoogudeepa, Pavithra Gowda, and five others in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case. The court also agreed to examine the Karnataka government's challenge to a High Court order granting bail to the accused.
A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan issued the notice following the state's plea against the Karnataka High Court’s December 2024 bail order. The state government expressed concern that other co-accused could benefit from this decision.
The Supreme Court explained that while the state has sought cancellation of bail, it would not be appropriate to stay the High Court's order as that would effectively cancel the bail. However, the court said, "To protect the interest of prosecution, if any co-accused prays for bail, the court concerned shall not place reliance on the order challenged before us. Any bail application filed shall be decided on its own merit."
The Karnataka High Court granted bail to Darshan and the others on December 13, 2024. Darshan had been arrested on June 11, 2024, for allegedly being involved in the murder of his fan, Renukaswamy. Renukaswamy, a 33-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, was reportedly attacked on June 8, 2024, after he allegedly sent obscene messages to actress Pavithra Gowda. The actor allegedly ordered his fan base to capture Renukaswamy, who later succumbed to his injuries.
