💡 Compositional Background

Alexander Borodin composed his String Quartet No. 2 in D major in 1881 during a summer retreat near Moscow. Written to celebrate his 20th wedding anniversary, the piece is often described as a heartfelt musical “love letter” to his wife, Ekaterina Protopopova.

Borodin met Ekaterina, a pianist, in 1861 while working as a chemist in Heidelberg, Germany. Deeply devoted to her despite her chronic illness, he accompanied her to Italy for treatment and cared for her throughout their marriage.

Unlike many of his works, this quartet was completed quickly and radiates lyrical warmth and tenderness. Borodin wove musical dialogues between himself (represented by the cello) and his wife (the first violin), creating one of the most romantic chamber works of the 19th century — especially the famous third movement, Notturno.

Their lifelong devotion came to an end in 1887 when Borodin died suddenly of a heart attack. After his death, Ekaterina was overcome with grief, and her health rapidly declined; she passed away five months later.
