Elon Musk was tweeting about nickel, iron and lithium in late February, just before Tesla announced it is becoming a technical advisor to Goro, a controversial nickel mine in New Caledonia that Vale has put up for sale and struggled to find a buyer. At the same time, a large Chinese stainless steel producer Tsingshan announced a nickel matte technology it says will be used for battery grade nickel supply which resulted in a sharp drop in nickel prices on the London Metal Exchange.
