Kerala Trissur Suicide Tragedy: Three Elderly Sisters Die Amid Rising Isolation And Health Issues

A tragic incident in Kerala's Thrissur, where three elderly sisters aged between 70 and 80 died by suicide, has highlighted the growing crisis of isolation among the state's aging population. Experts attribute this trend to the migration of the younger generation to the Gulf and Europe, leaving seniors with financial instability and physical ailments. Kerala's elderly population, currently at 18.7%, is projected to rise significantly by 2031. In response to these challenges, the Kerala government has introduced the country's first dedicated elderly budget for the 2026-2027 financial year, allocating over ₹46,000 crore for senior citizen welfare. This accounts for 19.07% of the total budget outlay. Additionally, the state has established the Vayujana Commission, an independent legal body mandated to ensure the protection and rehabilitation of senior citizens. While some find solace in assisted living facilities like the Vanchi Poor Fund Home, mental health professionals urge families to watch for signs of social withdrawal and seek psychological support to prevent further tragedies.
