The Atheist Candidates Project

Non-religious Americans are among the most under-represented minorities in American government. At more than 20% of the American adult population, we have one member of Congress, zero governors, and a handful of state legislators, and little representation elsewhere in government. The Atheist Candidates Project was created to address this issue. Using Arizona as a model for success, the project was founded in 2017 with a limited scope: provide networking to prospective candidates, operate with a volunteer staff, and run on a barebones budget for occasional travel and communications costs. Leading up to the 2018 election cycle, it became clear that the demand created for atheist candidates in Arizona was not a one state phenomenon. Americans are ready for atheist candidates and the Atheist Candidates Project must rise to meet them.

This presentation will provide background on successes running and electing atheists in Arizona, discuss the original plan for the Atheist Candidates Project, and present the project’s roadmap for 2020.

Andre Salais is a political professional in the secular movement with experience in legislative analysis, political strategy and communications, policy consulting, and campaign management. Over the past eight years, Andre worked with twenty-four atheist candidates and recruited past and future atheist candidates in 17 states. He is a political strategist and owner of Method Social Kinetics LLC, Chief Operations Officer at Unite Congress Inc., and Director of the Atheist Candidates Project.

Outside of activism, Andre studies religious social systems and their impact on political behavior, covering areas such as religion and conflict behavior, religious and secular thought on statecraft, applied ethics, and policy making.
