Refusing to Follow a DOT Drug Test Collector's Instructions Can Cost You Your CDL Career

Many drivers don't realize that refusing to comply with a urine specimen collector's instructions can be reported as a refusal to test.

That includes refusing to secure personal belongings, follow collection procedures, or comply with the collector's lawful requests during the testing process.

A refusal is treated the same as a DOT drug test violation and will be documented in the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse. Once that happens, you may be placed in Prohibited Status and be unable to perform safety-sensitive functions until you complete the Return-to-Duty process.

✅ Follow all collector instructions.
✅ Understand your responsibilities during a DOT drug test.
✅ Protect your CDL and your livelihood.

If you've received a refusal, tested positive, or are currently in Prohibited Status, help is available.
