Thrust! (Part 2): Hall Effect Thruster Day 8 #electricpropulsion #engineering #physics #day8

Building upon the previous video’s work, today we find the equation of thrust for Hall Thrusters!

This is quite a math-heavy topic, but I tried my best to explain how to derive the equation based on the general thrust formula seen previously.

A ton, and I mean a TON of simplifications had to be made in order to fit in this video format, so there are a lot of factors that haven’t been accounted for yet, such as the population of singly and doubly charged ions. The formula shown in this video applies for a unidirectional, singly ionized, monoenergetic beam of ions, and doesn’t account for the divergence of the ion beam.

If you would like me to further explain the added nuances to the thrust equation, let me know! I’d love to do more of a deep-dive into Hall Thrusters. And if any of my explanations have flaws in them, please let me know so that I can correct them promptly.

I hope you all are enjoying watching these videos as much as I enjoy making them! See you for Day 9!!
