The International Criminal Court refuses to release the former Philippine president

The International Criminal Court ruled on Friday that former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte , 80, must remain in detention on charges of crimes against humanity, despite requests from his lawyers for his release due to his age and deteriorating health.

Appeals judges rejected one request for Duterte's conditional release on health grounds, meaning he will remain in court custody awaiting a possible trial.
Despite this, Duterte's lawyers have also filed several other motions to have the entire case dismissed. The lawyers argue that his detention is illegal and that the International Criminal Court has no jurisdiction over the Philippines after the country withdrew from it in 2019.

Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court say Duterte was complicit in several killings as part of what he called his "war on drugs," first as mayor of a southern city and later as president of the country.

According to court records, he issued instructions and authorized "the commission of acts of violence, including murder, against alleged criminals, including alleged drug dealers and users."

Estimates of the number of deaths during Duterte's presidential term vary, with the national police saying the number exceeded 6,000, while human rights groups claimed the number reached 30,000. Families of the victims welcomed Duterte's arrest last March.

Duterte's lawyers say he is "weak and incapacitated" and that it is "cruel" to keep him in custody during the trial.
