Slavoj Zizek — There is nothing inherently revolutionary in transgenderism

Zizek begins with a discussion about Karl Marx and his prediction that traditional, patriarchal social norms will become uprooted as capitalism progresses. Zizek argues that Marx did not go far enough because he did not see the fluidisation of gender and sexual identities coming. In that sense, he argues that, though frequently associated with the left, there is nothing inherently revolutionary about the #metoo and transgender movements, because they do not question the underlying economic system as such. He continues to argue that what is considered clinically and psychologically normal as opposed to abnormal must always be viewed in the socio-economic context in which such claims are made.
