Disable Ethernet Network Adapter in Windows 11 / 10 PC or Laptop (Easy Steps)
Want to disable your Ethernet (LAN / Wired) connection in Windows 11 or Windows 10? Maybe to force WiFi use, troubleshoot network issues, stop auto-connecting to wired LAN, or save power on laptop? In this quick guide, learn the simplest way to disable the Ethernet network adapter – works on Windows 11 & Windows 10 (Home/Pro).
Step-by-Step Guide to Disable Ethernet Adapter:
1 Click Start button (or press Windows key).
2 Type Control Panel → Open Control Panel.
3 Click Network and Sharing Center (or Network and Internet → Network and Sharing Center).
4 On the left side → Click Change adapter settings (or right side link).
5 In Network Connections window → Find your Ethernet adapter (usually named "Ethernet", "Local Area Connection", or "Ethernet 2").
If you see multiple, check the one with "Connected" status or cable icon.
6 Right-click on Ethernet → Click Disable.
7 Wait a few seconds – the Ethernet icon will turn gray/disabled (no more wired internet).
To Re-Enable Ethernet Later:
Right-click the same Ethernet adapter → Click Enable → It reconnects immediately.
Important Tips:
This disables only the wired Ethernet adapter – WiFi remains active (you can disable WiFi separately if needed).
Alternative fast way: Right-click Start → Network Connections → Right-click Ethernet → Disable (Windows 11 shortcut).
If Ethernet is not visible: Check cable is plugged in → Device Manager → Network adapters → Show hidden devices (View menu) → Enable if disabled.
To disable permanently or schedule: Use Device Manager → Right-click Ethernet → Disable device (more advanced).
Works on Windows 10 & 11 (same steps); also works on Windows 7/8.
Troubleshooting: If no change after disable – Restart PC or run Network Troubleshooter (Settings → Network & Internet → Status → Network troubleshooter).
