How to Create Huge Ambient Synth Pads [Free Plugins]

In this video you’ll learn how to create ambient pads using a synth and samples. Synth pads are great for adding texture, mood, space and layering to your music production.

I’ll be doing this in Ableton Live, but you can use any DAW to follow along. All of the plugins I’ll be using are free. You can find the download links for all of them below:

First, you’ll learn how to create an ambient pad using a synth. The synth I’ll be using is called Helm by Matt Tytel. It’s a free subtractive synthesizer with a great user interface. I’ll explain the basic parameters of this synth, and show you how to use it to create an organic sound that can be turned into an ambient pad.

Next, I’ll take the sound we made and apply the powerful free reverb TAL-2. I’ll explain the parameters in this reverb plugin, and show you how to use them to shape the pad.

The next ambient pad you’ll learn how to make will be using two vocal samples. I’ll import them into simpler, and show you how to find sections to work with. It’s important to find sections that don’t change in pitch too much, because you’ll eventually tune the samples so that they can be played together.

After the samples are prepared, I’ll demonstrate how to send them to a return track to be processed. On the return track, I’ll bring up TAL-2 again and begin to shape the sounds into an ambient pad. To end the video, I’ll process the pad further with effects, and demo the pad in a musical context.
