The Secret Behind a Photo You Thought You knew Everything About

On February 23, 1945, Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press captured a powerful image. The iconic photograph depicted six United States Marines raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima.

However unrepeatable the event was, the truth behind the photograph tells a different story.

As the photographer was climbing up the mountain when the American troops erected the flag, he missed the action. Still, the Marines soon got an order to remove that flag and raise a second, bigger one that would tower above the battlefield and boost the troops’ morale.

Rosenthal was now on top and ready to document what followed. But in an ironic twist of fate, he almost lost the extraordinary opportunity few war reporters ever get: a second chance at capturing a legendary moment for posterity…
