Throughout his career, John Dowland showed a keen interest in the music of a wide range of European composers. Beginning with his apprenticeship to Sir Henry Cobham in Paris from 1580 to 1584, he heard and studied the lute and vocal music of leading French composers. He also traveled through Italy and Germany, where he had the opportunity to meet and hear many composers and lutenists. Dowland borrowed ideas from each of them to add richness and variety to his own music. In this special online recital, we will hear John Dowland’s own compositions, as well as the music he encountered on his travels around Europe in the early 17th century. Music by Huwet, Molinaro, Johnson, Dowland himself, and more.

The American lutenist, conductor, and music researcher, Paul O'Dette, is one of the most influential figures in his field, and has helped define the technical and stylistic standards of historically-informed performance. While in high school, he played electric guitar in a rock band, leading to his discovery and passion for the lute (as well as the related archlute, theorbo, and Baroque mandolin). Paul O’Dette has recorded over 100 solo and ensemble albums, subsequently winning prestigious accolades, including a Grammy award, multiple Diapason d’Or awards, CHOC du Monde de la Musique, and a Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Paul O’Dette is the co-artistic director of the Boston Early Music Festival, and is on faculty at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

Recorded at Calvary St. Andrews in Rochester, NY on September 16, 2020.
