The Biggest Lie in Youth Sports: “Winning Doesn’t Matter”

One of the dumbest narratives in youth sports is the idea that “it’s not about winning, it’s about development.”

Quick disclaimer: I got a little heated in this video. Some of the things I said were expressions of frustration and passion for the topic, not personal attacks on specific individuals. I genuinely care about coaching, player development, and the game of basketball, and while I strongly disagree with certain approaches, I don’t have personal animosity toward people who hold different views. I respect the profession a great deal of course, but I do feel some in positions of power are irresponsible at times.
Development matters. Obviously.
But development for what?
To win.
That’s the entire point of competitive sports.
Somewhere along the way, youth sports created this strange belief that winning and development are opposites. They’re not. In fact, winning is often the result of proper development.
When I coached youth basketball, we didn’t choose between development and winning. We taught fundamentals:
• Box outs
• Triple threat
• Pivoting
• Right-hand and left-hand layups
• Proper screen angles
• Spacing
• Help-side defense
• Defensive rotations
• Man-to-man concepts
• Zone concepts
• Presses
• Communication
• Transition defense
And we won championships.
Because fundamentals help teams win.
That’s basketball.
Competition matters.
Learning accountability matters.
Learning how to execute under pressure matters.
Learning how to prepare matters.
Learning how to play for something bigger than yourself matters.
The best youth environments aren’t choosing between development and winning. They’re developing players through the pursuit of winning.
I also discuss how modern AAU culture often prioritizes highlights, exposure, and individual branding over the team concepts that actually drive winning basketball.
The best players don’t just develop skills.
They learn how their skills impact winning.
That’s real development.
