THE PIED PIPER - Full 1942 Feature Film starring Monty Wooley and Roddy McDowell.

The Pied Piper is a 1942 film about an irascible, upper class Englishman (Monty Wooley) vacationing in France, who is caught up in the German invasion of that country.

The Englishman reluctantly finds himself taking responsibility for the safe evacuation of an ever-growing group of children. When we meet him in the opening scene, it is clear that this well born gentleman belongs to a past era when children were seen and not heard. Preferring a sherry at his club while completing the Times crossword and a bit of fly fishing on the mill pond, he is an unlikely benefactor for a group of maddeningly inquisitive children.

As the narrative develops, so does the central character's compassion and humanity. He becomes a father figure and saviour to the children. He uses his stubbornness, courage and delightful pomposity to stare down challenges from various Nazis (watch for a great performance by Otto Preminger) while struggling through the chaos of a defeated France to get the children across the channel to safety.

Monty Wooley was nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for his note-perfect performance as the stuffy Edwardian Englishman who is simultaneously exasperated and charmed by the children whose lives he holds in his hands. The film itself was nominated for Best Picture. It also stars Roddy McDowall and Anne Baxter.
