OpenTelemetry and observability at Shopify, Splunk, and Google
Observability is critical for managing production services at scale whether you’re moving to microservices or are developing applications in a more traditional way. OpenTelemetry is a key part of this story and has established itself as the standard for capturing observability signals from your applications and the infrastructure it runs on. OpenTelemetry makes it easy for end users like Shopify to collect distributed traces and metrics across their stack, using different languages, client libraries, and observability backends like Stackdriver, Splunk, and others.
In this session:
- Understand the value of analyzing observability signals, with examples of how Shopify, Splunk, and Google use these to reduce outages and speed up development
- Learn how, like Shopify, you can use Google Cloud’s excellent built-in observability tools together with best-in-class third-party offerings to achieve your goals
- Be guided through a live demonstration of OpenTelemetry’s power and simplicity, starting with a basic hello world application and expanding to high-scale services running on a mix of VMs and Google Kubernetes Engine
Speakers: Steve Flanders, Morgan McLean, Francis Bogsanyi
