What all blood reports to be done ?
it will depend on kind of thyroid disease you have.
most common tests are : TSH, T3 ( Total and free), T4 ( Total and Free )
Antibodies are : Anti TPO ( Anti Thyroid Peroxidase ), Anti TG ( Anti Thyroglobulin Antibodies ) for Hashimoto"s Hypothyroidism and TRAB ( TSH Receptor Antibody test ) for Graves Disease
family history of Thyroid is important and may need antibody testing.
repeat Thyroid antibody tests are usually not needed.
TSH test is most common and most reliable test. It is Cheap and inexpensive also.

When to do the blood test ?
Is fasting required ?
Diabetes and Cholesterol health problem are common with thyroid disease.
Many research suggest fasting should be done however it is not compulsory. Fasting reports are better interpreted especially in Subclinical Hypothyroid and Infertility patients.

How many hours of fasting is needed ?
10 to 8 hours of fasting is ideal.

What time report should be done ?
Morning 8 to 9 AM . Thyroid hormone secretion has circadian rhythm.

Whether to take thyroid medicine or not to take on the day of blood testing ?
Levothyroxine half life is 7 days. If medicine is not taken than it will not make much impact. T3 half life is 18 to 72 hours.

What kind of Laboratory is needed ?
TSH ELISA test is better. NABL accredited laboratory is recommended. Do not keep changing lab.
Every lab has different reference range. Suddenly if your reports vary than laboratory change might be needed.

Effect of stress and Sleep on results
Lack of sleep can result in misinterpretation.
Stress increases Cortisol ( secreted by adrenal gland ) this can lead to misinterpretation of reports.

Can the test be done while having periods
Yes.

Effect of illness on report results
ideally reports not to be done while feeling sick.
mild fever will not have much result variation.
Chronic diarrhoea can misinterpret reports.

Sick Euthyroid Syndrome - when patient is in ICU hospitalisation. it can misinterpret reports.

Effect of Medication :
Biotin : B complex vitamin. used for hair and skin health. it should be stopped 3 days prior to the test.
Lithium : used for mental and psychiatric illness.
Amiodarone : used for heart condition. it can misinterpret.
Cancer and Immuno modulator drugs like interferon, Interleukin. inform your doctor.
