This simple technique, known as pinching, will increase the number of blooms on your dahlias. Pinching encourages the side buds to branch out, giving you a stronger, bushier plant and eventually more flowers.

You'll want to pinch just above the third or fourth leaf pair. Leggier plants can be pinched above the third leaf pair, whereas stockier plants can be pinched above the fourth leaf pair.

Pinching is a one-time technique. I find my plants are at about the right height for pinching by early to mid-July.
