Baby Seal Rescue with BOLT CUTTER from Hook
Naude, Antoine and Denzil from Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) spotted a large female Cape Fur Seal with a deep cut around her neck. The seal was too big to catch by hand so they took the net and managed to trap her after a short chase. Usually, as soon as the have a seal secured, they do a quick scan of the surrounding area to see if there are not any other in need. Naude spotted a young pup in a running group with a big commercial fishing hook piercing through his lip, and also dragging a big bundle of thick fishing line behind him.
They left the seal in the net to catch the pup and quickly got him pinned down. The hook went into his mouth and out through his lip. Luckily there is always a bolt cutter in the back of the response car, for these exact situations. Denzil quickly fetched the cutter and they snipped off the tip of the hook and could pull the rest out without causing any extra damage or pain to the poor seal pup.
When they got back to the first seal waiting patiently in the net, they found that it was actually a recapture. This is the term they use for seals that have been rescued before from entanglements, but still have scars and can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from the others. Judging by the depth of the wound this was a very serious cut before, but it was totally clear of infection and almost fully healed. We rely a lot on the natural antibacterial and antiseptic nature of salt water to clean the animals up, and this was a good confirmation for us.
We are in the process of applying for research permits to be able to tag seals that have been caught by us, in order to monitor healing progress a little easier.
