Too often drummers default to muffling their snare drum simply because they don’t like the balance of overtones they’re hearing. Some educators actually promote the idea of muffling when the tuning becomes challenging. There’s a simpler method though and it stems from the snare reso (snare side) drumhead. Assuming your wires and heads are in good, functional condition, this approach will allow you far more control of your drum without always needing to muffle it unnecessarily.
