Theology on Tap - Orange County: God and the Quantum
Prof. Andrew N. Jordan gives a brief introduction to quantum physics, and reflects on how ideas in quantum physics and information theory can enlighten our understanding of God. He argues that the main contribution quantum physics gives theological thought is new analogies about apparently contradictory aspects of the divine nature and the concept of information as the most spiritual physical thing.

Andrew N. Jordan was raised in Dallas, Texas. His B.S. in physics and mathematics is from Texas A&M and his PhD in theoretical physics is from UC Santa Barbara. After a three year postdoc at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, he has been professor of Physics at the University of Rochester in New York since 2006. Prof. Jordan has received the NSF CAREER award, and was named a Simons Fellow in theoretical physics in 2017. With more than 100 scientific publications and 4000 citations, his research interests include quantum information, measurement and control, quantum metrology, quantum thermodynamics, the mesoscopic physics of electron transport, and quantum optics. Married with four children, he was raised in the Episcopal church, enter the Catholic Church in 2012, and is a founding member of St. Alban’s church, Rochester, a member of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter. He is enjoying his year-long sabbatical in Orange County, attends Blessed John Henry Newman parish, and is working with colleagues at Chapman University and around the world.
