Typhoon Danas and heavy rains have dealt a hard blow to the agricultural sector of Southern Taiwan. In Yunlin, the corn crop and leafy vegetable fields in Yuanchang and Erlun have been ruined by the bad weather. President Lai Ching-te inspected the damage on Thursday, calling for government cooperation to address issues in the wake of the typhoon.

One of the hardest hit areas was Madou in Tainan. The famed pomelos of the locality were knocked down from their trees in vast amounts creating some unusual sights. In some areas, the fruits were sent floating away to end up on the road, while in others they remained in flooded areas like a lake of pomelos. Over in Chiayi, farmers had been looking forward to a bumper harvest, only to have their hopes shattered by the typhoon. The affected crops include guavas, bananas and bamboo shoots. The Ministry of Agriculture estimates agricultural losses of NT$2.1 billion.
