A road trip from Delhi to Narkanda is a popular and scenic journey.

Here is a summary of the route, distance, travel time, and key information:

1. The Main Route
The most common and recommended route is via National Highway (NH) 44 and then NH 5.

Route: Delhi → Panipat → Karnal → Ambala → Chandigarh (or bypass via Zirakpur/Himalayan Expressway) → Kalka → Solan → Shimla → Kufri → Theog → Narkanda

Total Distance: Approximately 400 km to 420 km (250 to 260 miles).

Estimated Driving Time: 9 to 11 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions, and the number of stops. The time can increase significantly due to traffic congestion around Chandigarh and Shimla, and during road widening work on the hilly sections.

2. Road Conditions & Driving Tips
Delhi to Shimla (Approx. 350 km): This stretch is mostly a smooth, four-lane national highway (NH 44 and then the Himalayan Expressway/NH 5).

The Himalayan Expressway (connecting Zirakpur to Parwanoo) helps bypass the busy towns of Kalka and Pinjore.

Be prepared for heavy traffic around Chandigarh/Zirakpur and potential delays on the Chandigarh-Shimla section (NH 5), as road widening projects are often ongoing, which can cause bottlenecks.

Shimla to Narkanda (Approx. 60 km): This part of the journey is on the scenic Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH 5) and is a moderate to steep hilly drive with narrow, winding roads after Kufri/Theog.

Caution is advised on the curves and especially in this final leg.

Road conditions on this section (NH 5) are generally reported to be good, but they are a single carriageway in many places.

3. Stops and Breakpoints
Murthal (near Delhi): Famous for roadside eateries (Dhabas) like Amrik Sukhdev or Haveli, perfect for breakfast.

Karnal / Ambala: Good options for a mid-morning tea/coffee break.

Solan / Shimla: Suitable for a lunch break. Shimla is often bypassed, but if you enter the city, it can cause traffic delays.

Kufri / Theog: You'll start seeing stunning Himalayan views from Kufri onwards. Narkanda is about 35 km from Theog.

4. Travel Tips
Best Time to Start: Start very early in the morning (around 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM) from Delhi to avoid city traffic and the heavy goods vehicle traffic on the highway, ensuring you reach the hills before sunset.

Winter Travel (Dec-Feb): Narkanda often receives heavy snowfall. Roads near Kufri and Narkanda can be blocked or extremely slippery, sometimes requiring a 4x4 vehicle or snow chains. Always check the latest road status before leaving.

Monsoon Travel (Jul-Sep): The hilly section is prone to landslides. Exercise extreme caution during this period.

Fuel/Food: The highway is well-serviced with fuel stations and food outlets until you cross Shimla. It is advisable to tank up at Shimla or Theog before the final climb to Narkanda, as options become sparse later.
