Brett Eldredge Talks Ray LaMontagne: On the Record
One of country music’s young stars, Brett Eldredge racked up no less than three No. 1 singles with his 2013 debut album, Bring You Back. Eldredge sat down to take our On the Record challenge, and in 45 seconds he let us know what it was he loved about Ray LaMontagne’s 2008 album, Gossip in the Grain.
Eldredge says the album has “so much soul” and that LaMontagne’s voice carries “so much grit. I listen to it when I go onstage, and ‘You Are the Best Thing’ puts me in the love mood.”
After touring with the likes of Taylor Swift, Little Big Town, Darius Rucker and Thomas Rhett, Eldredge is going to be on the road again, promoting his new album, Illinois. The album was named after his home state, and first single “Lose My Mind” has already cracked the Top 10 on the country charts. (If you haven’t heard of Eldredge yet, you may recognize him as one of this year’s judges in the Miss America Pageant. He asked the winning contestant, Georgia’s Betty Cantrell, if she felt Tom Brady cheated as part of “deflategate.”)
The reigning CMA New Artist of the Year is no slouch when it comes to songwriting — he cowrote each of Illinois’ 12 tracks. "And that not because I don't want to cut any outside songs," he told Rolling Stone. "I just got in a groove where it was really working, and when they come from you and your stories and your soul, they're even more believable."
With an unconventional approach at times — from going skydiving to celebrate his first No. 1 hit to referencing Gnarls Barkley’s 2006 hit “Crazy” on his new single — Eldredge’s soulful twist puts a refreshing new spin on an old tradition.
