Wildlife in the home with George McGavin: SPIDERS
Isolation Wildlife Photography Awards: https://www.iwpawards2020.com/
Recently my friend Jack Mortimer and I set up a wildlife photography compeition with the aim of giving people in isolation and lockdown something to focus on and encourage people to engage with the wildlife closest to home.
One of the ways we wanted to build on this was to make short, one minute videos for social media that gave people interesting info about the wildlife in their homes and gardens, how to help that wildlife by building certain things or that give tips on photography and videography.
We approached zoologist George McGavin and asked if there was anything in his home that he could think of, that may encourage people to get taking photos and engaging with wildlife who didn't necessarily have access to a green space. He came back with far more than a minutes worth of footage talking about spiders.
Hearing this, and realising there was a connection between three household species (the house spider, the cellar spider and the spitting spider) that was really quite fascinating, we went back to him with an idea for a slightly more in depth video. He very kindly agreed and we all worked together to produce this video.
I hope you all enjoy watching this and are encouraged to take a look at the wildlife we all often overlook.
