We always use the maximum bitrate available when encoding DVDs. The big “box” companies do not - as seen in this video. A 1 hr, 18 min video should fill the disc, not only use half. Lower bitrate = lower quality.

Same goes with MP4 files. Many companies use a lower bitrate to create smaller files so they can give you a smaller drive or download. This leads to more compression and bad quality. Always ask about the bitrate!
