Do You Have What It Takes To Be A Wedding Florist?

Hello Flower Friends! I'm Ellen. Sign up for my FREE weekly newsletter (https://www.ellenfrost.com/join-now) for more flower fun! I write flower profiles, chronicle my flower adventures and share flower stories.

In this video I challenge if you have what it takes to be a wedding florist. Not everyone can cut it. But, if you really want to be a wedding florist I review the process, skills required and questions to answer to help you decide if the job is for you.

Here's a quick run-through of the process of doing the work of a wedding florist: Wedding couples need to find you so marketing is essential. Once a potential couple inquires about your services you will have a consultation with them resulting in a proposal. If accepted, you need to get to work on the wedding - ordering materials, continuing communication with the client, building a team, designing and delivering the products, and retrieving and following up (photographs and reviews). While all that is happening you need to find more wedding couples to hire you and start the process with them.

Wedding florists require particular skills. Obviously you need competency in floral design. Excellent customer service and communication are also important. Weddings are emotional events with high expectations. Project management skills including problem solving, time allocation, organization and managing multiple priorities are needed. Something that is often overlooked is the physical nature of the job. There are long hours on your feet, carrying heavy loads, climbing ladders and repetitive movements. You need to be smart, tough and always smiling.

Questions to answer if wedding floristry is right for you:

Do I love flowers and floral design?
Do I want to give up my weekends?
Am I business-minded?
Am I comfortable working closely with emotional (and sometime unreasonable) strangers over months for the most expensive and important day of their lives?

Being a wedding florist isn't for everyone. For me, some of the best moments of my florist career have been handing off bouquets to brides. If you think you have what it takes, do it!
