Hi y’all

My name is Mr. Chao and welcome to Chao Time. I’m back with the Baby Alpinist, a mini version of the explorer’s field watch from Seiko. Many thanks to my good friend who allowed me to borrow this watch for review. His generosity and others like him are making it possible for me to continue making reviews as buying and getting watches is rather difficult right now in Taiwan. One of the reasons is that the import fees here are crazy.

The way I review watches is by objectively scoring them against a rubric in the categories of case and bracelet, dial, movement, and then a slightly more subjective scoring on the brand to get a total score. I then take the score and apply a value multiplier to get a value score. Then, I rank the two scores against all the other watches I have reviewed up to that point. After the review, I give a completely subjective opinion based on my experience, emotions, sentimental ties, its character, how I’m feeling that day; the way that I believe most of us consider watches we consider buying.

Before we can begin scoring the watch against the rubric, we first need to understand the purpose of the watch and what design language inspires it. Well, it’s a field watch, valuing toughness, legibility, and an adventurous mindset.
