For nearly 60 years, Cedar Cliff High School has hosted a landmark wrestling program that has produced successive generations of stand-out student athletes who have competed at the highest levels of the sport in the grappling-rich state of Pennsylvania. “Behind the Legacy: The Cedar Cliff Wrestling Story” is a feature documentary that takes a complete behind-the-scenes look at the personalities, stories, and the traditions that have contributed to a six-decade long dynasty that continues to strongly resonate in the lives of its wrestlers today.

Born in 1932, Bob Craig lost his parents in a tragic car accident at a young age. He went on to use his extraordinary athletic talents in an array of various sports including wrestling to rise out of his life as an orphan, attain a college degree, and then go on to accept high school coaching positions in both football and wrestling and become a true paternal mentor to hundreds of young athletes during the most impressionable years of their lives. Craig’s hard-nosed, yet deeply principled approach has been carried on by his own wrestlers-turned-coaches to continue his legacy passed Craig’s own lifetime and well into the 21st century.

Incorporating exclusive interviews with Cedar Cliff’s most successful wrestlers including 2 time PA State Champion and PSU All-American wrestler Steve Sefter (Class of 1980), former NFL Safety and CNN Host Coy Wire (1997), 1964 State Champion and Lock Haven wrestler Dr. Jim Blacksmith (1964), State Placeholder Bob Whalen (1988), the team’s current head coach and former wrestler Rob Rapsey (1981), one of Coach Craig’s first ever wrestlers and Coy Wire’s grandfather Ron “Blackie” Taylor (1959), along with Jared Royer (2004), Brian Ortenzio (2007), Chris Vassar (2013), Josh Colello (2016), and as well as Cedar Cliff’s very latest crop of wrestlers - Donovan Ball (2019), JJ Wilson (2019), and Michael Cassidy (2019).

Produced by award-winning filmmakers - Dan and Tami Shaffer of Shaffer Films, this documentary delves into the broader effects of Cedar Cliff wrestling well beyond the podiums of state place winning wrestlers to show the true community involvement, the values that can create a lifetime of successes, and the intergenerational familial ties that reside at the heart of Cedar Cliff Wrestling.

Dan and Tami thank the Cedar Cliff Wrestling Team and its Boosters for the opportunity to tell the story of the program and to meet and get to know those who have emerged from this program. It has truly been a special experience.
