Montague Phillips (1885-1969) Hillside Melody

Montague Fawcett Phillips was born in North London in 1885 and studied composition with Frederick Corder and John B McEwen. He wrote several miniature light orchestral pieces as well as some part songs for his wife soprano Clara Butterworth. He is mostly remembered today for the orchestral pieces and his style is often compared with that of Eric Coates and Haydn Wood.
Hillside Melody op40 one of his earliest works was published in 1925 and revised in 1946, which is the version played here, and was first performed by the BBC Welsh Orchestra. Around this time Phillips wrote many more evocative pieces. Phillips outlived most of his contemporaries passing away in January 1969. His wife Clara Butterworth not only long outlived him, but also most of her family, and Finally died in 1997 at the amazing age of 109! - Hillside Melody is played by the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Gavin Sutherland.
