The heartbreaking sight stopped them in their tracks: a mama, deceased in her kennel, as her six, newborn puppies crowded her cold body for warmth. Little did shelter staff know—this mama had Parvovirus, one of the most contagious, life-threatening diseases among dogs. It had killed her, claiming her life before she even had a chance. Worse? Her babies had Parvo, too.

The shelter gave us one hour to save the two-week-old puppies before they would be euthanized. Without a mama, the shelter couldn’t provide for them. And their little bodies, wracked by parvo, posed a severe risk to every dog around them. They wouldn’t last much longer without help. Heartbroken, we rushed over. We couldn’t leave them behind—they at least deserved a chance.

Parvovirus shuts down the immune system before wreaking havoc on the gastrointestinal tract. Puppies, especially so young, hardly have anything left to defend themselves as the virus festers within their bodies. At our rescue, we immediately quarantined them, providing round-the-clock IV fluids, antibiotics, anti-nausea medications, iron and vitamin C supplements, and a medicine to soothe the stomach lining. With no mama, we must also bottle-feed them and ensure they’re kept warm.

The journey will be painstaking, emotionally intense, and costly, but we’re determined to do everything possible to ensure these little ones can live to see another day.
