The Blue Lake - Golwern Slate Quarry - Fairbourne

One of my and my moms favourite places. Mom visited here during her youth when she lived in North Wales during WW2. As a child and through my teens she took us many times.... always very emotional... as she recalled some of the happiest years of her life.

This visit was on the 29th December 2013 when I took my Son, Simon, and his girlfriend Gemma along.

I have included a photograph my mother took in 1963 showing the winch house .. which was later demolished as it was unsafe. Just the winch wheel remains now.

Also some black & white photos taken by me in July 1974 when, along with a friend James, I explored the old tunnels adjacent to the Blue Lake. As far as I am aware the entrance was blocked off many years ago and access is not possible (unless anyone knows different !!)

Finally .... at the end of the video I give some sad news. The tunnel and only access to the lake has been blocked. The land owner was fed up removing waste... rubbish, BBQs and other stuff left by idiot visitors.... in 2019 he dumped 60 tonnes of rock into the tunnel. Why do people have no regard for places of beauty..... ruined it for everyone !!!
