Hegseth Again Lectures NATO In Front Of NATO Chief: ‘'Era Of Free Riding Is Over’ | World News

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reiterated that Ukraine must continue receiving military support while European allies simultaneously strengthen their own defence capabilities, arguing the two goals are complementary. He stressed that Russia is suffering heavy battlefield losses and is no longer making significant advances, while Ukraine has stabilised the front line through resilience and long-range strikes. Rutte maintained that only Russian President Vladimir Putin can decide to end the war, despite ongoing diplomatic contacts, and praised U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts to push both sides toward negotiations. He also defended Ukraine's right to strike military targets inside Russia as an act of self-defence following Moscow's 2022 invasion, while reaffirming NATO's long-term commitment to Kyiv. Beyond Ukraine, Rutte said NATO would gradually reduce troop levels in Kosovo as security conditions improve and noted that any future dialogue with Russia is currently being discussed within the European Union rather than NATO.
