The Prince of Wales Bridge

I made a video about an old abandoned bridge.

Script:
When I decided to make this video, I asked myself ‘Why would someone watch a video about a bridge?’ And then I asked ‘Why do I even care about this bridge?’ and then ‘Who the hell even is the Prince of Wales?’
These were hard questions. I mean, there isn’t anything particularly interesting about this bridge, and where even is Wales?

The Bridge cost 312 thousand dollars, in the year 1880 (which is about 7.5 million dollars today.) Workers went on strike. They were paid 85 cents per day, they wanted $1.10. And they were replaced. Later, during the spring melt, when the water is high and fast, one worker drowned.

The bridge opened to regular traffic 1881.
The bridge served well into the 20th century.
In 2005 it was disconnected from the rest of the track.
In 2016 the City of Ottawa installed fences to block entrance to the bridge.
And in 2019 it was decided that the bridge will never be used for rail transit again.
The Prince of Wales bridge represents more than just an abandoned bridge.
It represents crumbling, outdated infrastructure.
It represents our ability to plan for the future.
But it also represents the explorers, the thrill seekers and the dog walkers.

There is still hope for the bridge.
The mayors of Ottawa and Gatineau are hoping the federal government will help fund renovating the bridge to be a safe pedestrian and cycling crossing. Which was estimated to cost $10 million.
Personally, I like the bridge just how it is. Really, places like this are part of the reason why I like to live in Ottawa (that and no poisonous things).
There are so many cool places to explore.

Thank you for your time,
Stay tuned.

In case you were actually wondering who the Prince of wales is;
Since the 14th century, the title has been a dynastic title granted by the king or queen to the heir apparent to the British monarch.
When the bridge was made the heir to the throne was Albert Edward. Same guy as King Edward, like the street.
Edward was the longest-serving heir apparent in British history.
He was surpassed by his great-great-grandson Prince Charles on April 20th, 2011.

Thanks again.
Till next time. Stay tuned.
