How-To: Flush Navien Tankless Water Heater with vinegar

How-To: Flush Navien Tankless Water Heater with vinegar

Items Needed:

* sump pump
* 2x water inlet hoses 4-6 feet
* 5 gallon bucket
* approx. 12-14L of 10% strength vinegar

Step-by-Step:

1. Turn off all power to your to your tankless water heater. I turned off the panel, the power switch in the Navien as well as disconnecting the power cord from the power outlet.

2. Close the cold and hot water valves from the unit to the house.

3. Remove the cold and hot water caps, connect your inlet hoses and place the other ends into your bucket.

4. Open the cold and hot water valves from the unit to your inlet hoses to empty water from your unit into the bucket.

5. Remove and clean the cold and hot water screens. Remember to screw back in.

6. Remove and clean the waste trap. Remember to put back in.

7. Place sump pump into bucket and connect the cold water inlet hose to the sump pump.

8. Fill bucket with approx. 12-14L of vinegar or roughly 3/4 full.

9 Plug in sump pump to begin circulating and cleaning. It may take 10-20 seconds for vinegar to begin exiting the hot water inlet hose back into the bucket, during this time you'll see the vinegar level the bucket lower 3-4 inches as the unit is filled with vinegar.

10. Leave running for 60-90 minutes. DO NOT USE WATER IN THE HOUSE.

11. Once cleaning is complete unplug sump pump and essentially reverse the above steps. Check the screens and trap again and clean if necessary.

12. Once the Navien is back up try running the hot water on each facet in the house, one at a time, for a few minutes each. You may see spitting of the water initially, followed by almost kind of a soapy sudsy water though this will clear up. You may even see some scale (mineral deposit) flushed through your facets that will come out as a light brownish water colour, again this will clear up.

13. Lastly dump out the vinegar from your bucket and replace with clean cold water. With one inlet house connected to the pump at a time run in a closed system in the bucket for a couple minutes. Repeat for the other hose.

Congratulations you just saved yourself hundreds of dollars annually!
