Emergency department visits for tick bites are rising in the West, with CDC data showing 31 tick-related complaints per 100,000 ER visits in April. Nationally, tick-bite ER visits reach 71 per 100,000—the highest in nearly a decade—far above the ~30 per 100,000 typical this time of year. This year’s rate has already jumped from April 2025’s 22 and April 2024’s 20. Northern California wildlife officials issued a tick advisory for East Bay Regional Parks as hikers head into the season. Ticks transmit diseases including Lyme, RMSF, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, Powassan, babesiosis, and Alpha-gal syndrome. Tick season peaks May through fall. Experts note the rise may reflect both more ticks and greater awareness. Prevention includes staying out of tall grass, using EPA-registered repellents, treating clothing with permethrin, wearing long sleeves, performing full-body checks, showering within two hours, and inspecting gear and pets. If bitten, remove with tweezers near the skin, avoiding twisting.
