Why Jurassic Park Could Never Happen—At Least Not the Way You Think

Have you ever wondered if it’s actually possible to extract dinosaur DNA from a mosquito trapped in amber, like in Jurassic Park?
“It’s not,” says paleontologist Dr. Ken Lacovara. “Amber is actually a terrible geochemical environment.”
In a recent interview with WIRED, Dr. Lacovara tackled some of the most popular dinosaur myths and questions—like why the T. rex had such tiny arms and what made its skull so bizarre. But one of the biggest takeaways? The science behind resurrecting dinosaurs just doesn’t hold up.
DNA degrades over time, and the oldest DNA ever recovered is about 800,000 years old. Dinosaurs vanished roughly 66 million years ago, which puts them way outside the realm of genetic recovery.
So no, we’re not cloning raptors anytime soon—but scientists are exploring the idea of reverse-engineering modern birds (yes, chickens!) to bring back dino-like creatures. A “Chickenosaurus” might be more realistic than a Tyrannosaurus.
Still—if Jurassic Park was real… would you buy a ticket? Let me know in the comments.
