Funky backing track A Major | 82 BPM | MusicBuddy
Funky Track in A Major (82 bpm)
Key of A Major
This is the most common theoretical interpretation because the first two chords form a classic ii - V progression in A Major.
Bm7 (ii7): The 2nd degree of A Major.
E9 (V9): The 5th degree (dominant) of A Major. This chord strongly resolve to an A Major chord.
D9 (IV9): The 4th degree. While usually a Major 7th in classical theory, in Jazz and Blues, the 4th degree is often played as a dominant/9th chord for extra color.
It could also be the key of D Major
Bm7 (vi7): The relative minor and 6th degree of D Major.
E9 (II9): A "secondary dominant" (V of V). In D Major, the 2nd degree is normally minor (Em), but changing it to a dominant E9 adds tension that leads toward the 5th (A) or back to D.
D9 (I9): The 1st degree (tonic). Using a dominant 9th as the home chord is a staple of Funk, Blues, and Soul music.
Chord Recommended Scale Relation to Key
Bm7 B Dorian / A Major ii in A Major
E9 E Mixolydian V in A Major
D9 D Mixolydian IV in A Major or I in D
Have fun ;)
