China unlikely to be swayed with Joe Biden ‘playing nice’ in presidential meetings

Former US Army vice chief of staff General Jack Keane says the concern with Joe Biden meeting China’s President Xi Jinping is the belief of “playing nice” to change behaviours.

“I don’t dispute the fact that world leaders, even adversarial leaders, should have meetings; we had plenty of them dealing with the Soviet Union through the years,” General Keane told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

“And at times, quite remarkably, they led to some treaty negotiations.

“My concern about this has always been the Biden administration’s preoccupation with the value of the meetings … they are under the belief that by playing nice with China, they can actually change their behaviour.”

Mr Keane sat down with Mr Bolt to discuss the meeting between US President Joe Biden and China’s President Xi Jinping.
