The Kingdom of Kush lasted 3,000 years — longer than Rome. Their pharaohs rebuilt ancient Egypt's greatest temples. Their greatest king, Taharqa, is mentioned by name in the Bible. Their 255 pyramids are still standing in the Sudanese desert.

Their writing system — the Meroitic Script — was discovered in the 1800s. It has never been fully decoded.
