Isopod Care Guide: Fix the Mistake That Kills Them

Most isopods die because keepers treat them like insects — but they're crustaceans that literally suffocate in dry tanks.

🔬 Isopods have no lungs — they breathe through underside structures called pleopods and must stay coated in a microscopic layer of moisture at all times.
⚠️ A bone-dry enclosure cuts off their air supply; damp sphagnum moss on one side keeps humidity at 70–80% while the opposite side stays dry to block bacterial infections.
💡 Isopods must shed heavy exoskeletons continuously — without free-choice calcium like a cuttlebone, they get trapped in failed molts and die.
🦎 Temperature drives metabolism: beginner species like Porcellio scaber breed at room temperature, while premium species like the Cubaris "Rubber Ducky" need environments near 80°F.
