While the New Nintendo 3DS/ New Nintendo 2DS systems have built-in NFC readers the original Nintendo 3DS / Nintendo 2DS consoles predated Nintendo's Amiibos and thus do not have an NFC capabilities - enter the Nintendo NFC Reader / Writer! Originally released with Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (also sold separately), the NFC Reader / Writer can read and write Amiibo data and transmit to the 3DS via IR infrared. Play with your Amiibo, against your Amiibo, connect and play multiplayer on the go - without an Internet connection - by connection through the Nintendo 3DS ad hoc wireless LAN connection using two handheld consoles and two copies of Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS. This will work with both physical and digital editions of the game.
