How to Extend ESC Wires Correctly

How to Extend ESC Wires Correctly

The video discusses the correct (and easiest) way to extend the wires on your electronic speed control (ESC).

Given the particular setup of your RC model airplane, boat, etc., you may have the need to extend the wires connecting your motor to the electronic speed control (ESC). This could be due to a need to locate a battery further aft for center of gravity considerations, a unique motor pylon, etc.

The more difficult method is to lengthen the two wires to the battery. Due to technical reasons of how the ESC communicates to the brushless motor, you will need to add capacitors if you extend the battery wires.

A much simpler, and in my view correct way to extend the wire length is to simply extend the three wires from the ESC to the motor. This can be done with no damage to the ESC and no need to add capacitors. I have done this for wire lengths up to 12 inches.

One further tip to reduce interference is to twist the three wires from the ESC to the motor, with about three twists per inch required.
