1. If you are a CommunityHealth patient in the Hypertension Care Group, you may receive a blood pressure machine from our pharmacy. The type of blood pressure machine you will get is called OMRON Blood Pressure Monitor. Model number BP710NVA.

2. When you open your blood pressure monitor machine, be sure to save the box and any instructions inside.

3. If you find that your machine is not working, DO NOT throw it away! You must bring it back to the CommunityHealth pharmacy in its box so that we can check it out.

4. Before you use the machine for the first time, you will need to put in 4 AA batteries. These batteries are in the box with the blood pressure machine and the cuff when you open it.

5. The TUBE that is connected to the cuff gets inserted into a blue port on the side of the blood pressure machine.

6. You should relax in a chair for 5 minutes before to checking the blood pressure. You should not be lying down or standing up, but sitting in a chair.

7. You can check your blood pressure in the morning, afternoon, or evening, but dot it only ONCE per day.

8. Put blood pressure cuff on your bare arm, not over clothing. Raise the cuff on your arm above your elbow. When the cuff is on the correct part of your arm, you can bend your elbow comfortably.

9. If one of your arms is injured, bruised, or hurting, make sure to use the other arm to check your blood pressure. If both arms are in good health, you can use either arm to take your blood pressure.

10. Tighten the cuff around your arm using the Velcro. It should feel tight.

11. The tube that is connected to the machine should be pointed toward your open hand. The tube should be close to the body on the inside of your arm.

12. Your arm should be at about heart level. It should not be raised way above the heart or sitting on your lap, for example.

13. You should be sitting upright comfortably in a chair, with your feet flat on the floor. Do not cross your legs.

14. Once you are in the correct position, push the big blue button that says START/STOP on the blood pressure machine and wait for it to finish calculating your numbers. This can take up to a minute.

15. During the reading, make sure you are not talking or moving around. Doing these things can raise your blood pressure.

16. If the machine shows an error message, this is often because the cuff needs to be tighter. If this error message happens, you should turn the machine off, readjust (tighten) the cuff, and start from the beginning.

17. Write down your blood pressure numbers from the machine into your log book daily or every other day.

18. The first two numbers are the blood pressure (an example would be 120/80), third number is the pulse (80 for example).

19. “Perfect” blood pressure is 120/80. Anything between 100/60 and 140/100 is okay. The range of blood pressure numbers that are acceptable can be found in your Blood Pressure Log Book.

(NOTE FOR US: Show table in blood pressure log book)

20. If you are a CommunityHealth patient and your blood pressure is less than 100/60 or more than 140/100, please call the CommunityHealth nurses at 773-969-5961. If you are not a CommunityHealth patient, please call your own doctor.
