“You cannot teach a person anything. You can only help them find it within themselves.” So said Galileo. Whenever the jazz improvisation discussion ventures in the direction of jazz theory, objections may be heard. Some will disagree with a person’s interpretation; others will consider the nuts and bolts analysis of music antithetical to the creative process. Most will agree that music should ultimately come from the heart, not the brain. But can jazz theory be—at least in part—a means to that end?
