WHISTLER OPENING DAY 2020

There was a sense of relief rather than the usual excitement and anticipation that is normally associated with opening day in Whistler. With British Columbia, Canada, currently under some restrictions it was mostly locals showing up for the opening with most of the tourists, especially the American's that would be visiting for Thanksgiving noticeably absent. The air of nervousness persisted until the lifts starting letting people on and as soon as I was strapped into my board and riding, it was all about snowboarding.

I arrived in the village at 7.30am, 45 minutes before the lifts were to open, got a good place in the line (which brings up some interesting points about what time people are choosing to upload when they know they have a reservation. I tried to meet Andreas in Creekside but the parking filled up very quickly. Word from Andreas was Creekside Village was busy, and to my luck Whistler Village was surprisingly empty. I decided to take the chairs instead of the gondola and found another single so we could sit at either end with a two person gap between. As one of the first people up the mountain and my warm up lap was an empty run with pristine corduroy, and it didn't take me long to start having a little look at the powder on the side of the runs. After my first lap I joined Brett, Andreas and Alec.

As per normal for opening day there is limited terrain open, having said that almost everywhere was rideable. If you could get to it, chances are you could ride down it. There were a couple forest sections that were too tight and the undergrowth was still exposed, or a few gullies that weren't filled in. Overall it completely blew away our expectations and as the day progressed we got more and more bold in our exploring.

There has been some uncertainty around this day happening and obviously it's important to practice safe hygiene and follow the new instructions this year so we can continue to enjoy the mountains and all the awesomeness they have to offer. It was such an amazing and surreal day, and thanks to everyone involved in making it happen. It was a fantastic day.
