Conflict in Ukraine: International legal implications and the future of global alignment

A Panel Discussion recently hosted by the Society on the developing conflict in Ukraine, featuring Professor Stephen Smith, Dr. Melanie O'Brien, Ms. Caroline Sabater, Mr. Alessandro Silvestri and Mr. Eoin McNamara.

Professor Stephen Smith
Professor Stephen Smith is a former Minister for Defence and Foreign Affairs, serving in the Rudd and Gillard Labor Governments from 2007 until 2013 and for twenty years as the Federal member for Perth. Prior to entering politics, he practised as a barrister and solicitor and completed a Master of Laws in Public International Law at London University. He is now a Professor of International Law at the University of Western Australia and Chair of the UWA Defence and Security Institute.

Dr Melanie O’Brien
Dr Melanie O’Brien is Associate Professor of International Law at the University of Western Australia, and an award-winning teacher of International Humanitarian Law, Public International Law, and Legal Research. Dr O’Brien is President of the International Association of Genocide Scholars and a long-term Australian Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Committee member. Her research has been cited by and she has appeared before the International Criminal Court, and she has been an expert consultant for multiple UN bodies.

Caroline Sabater
Caroline is a Master of International Law student at UWA with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Curtin University. She has a particular interest in International Humanitarian Law, human rights and the role of media in armed conflict and international affairs. Caroline is also the Publications Vice President for the UWA International Law Society.

Alessandro Silvestri
Alessandro is a PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia specialising in the role of civilians in armed conflict under the overarching legal framework of International Humanitarian Law. His research focuses on the increasing ‘civilianisation’ of warfare and how the legal status of civilians may change as a result of their participation in hostilities.

Eoin McNamara
Mr McNamara is currently teaching International Relations at the University of Tartu in Estonia, and is completing a PhD in Political Science. His research centres around NATO stabilisation operations, conflict management and the globalisation of civil conflict. Mr McNamara has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals, having written on the areas of contemporary politics in the Baltic states and US foreign policy.
