🇪🇺🇲🇽 Historic EU–Mexico Deal Signed! Von der Leyen, Costa & Sheinbaum Seal New Strategic Partnership

A major new chapter in EU–Mexico relations has been signed in Mexico City. At the VIII EU–Mexico Summit, leaders signed the Modernised Global Agreement (MGA), the Interim Trade Agreement (ITA) and a new Letter of Intent on political and strategic coordination, deepening ties between Europe and Mexico.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum presided over the high-level signing ceremony.

Key agreements included:
📌 Modernised Global Agreement (MGA) signed by Ursula von der Leyen and Claudia Sheinbaum
📌 Interim Trade Agreement (ITA) signed by Maroš Šefčovič and Marcelo Ebrard
📌 Political & Strategic Dialogue Letter of Intent signed by Kaja Kallas and Roberto Velasco

The new package aims to strengthen cooperation in:

⚡ Trade, investment and economic certainty
🤖 Artificial intelligence, innovation and emerging technologies
🌍 Political coordination and global affairs
🏭 Automotive, aerospace, chemicals and strategic industries

The agreement is expected to expand market access, reduce tariffs, protect geographical indications and strengthen investment rules between both partners.

💶 EU investment in Mexico approached $10 billion in 2025
📈 EU remains Mexico’s second-largest foreign investor
🌐 Mexico and Europe pushing for deeper strategic diversification

The agreements will enter into force following ratification procedures in the European Parliament, EU member states and the Mexican Senate.
