In this video my friends, Richard and Zac, compare the off-road abilities of the New Defender, L663 to their third generation Range Rovers. Zac's L322 is a 2008 with the 4.4 NA V8, and Richard's L320 is a 2010 5.0 SC. The terrain is fairly tame, but still presents some interesting comparison opportunities and we discover how the L663 compares to the Rangies in hill descent, hill climbs, water crossings, snow, and on gravel trails.

We discovered the DSC issue affects this vehicle (occurs at 4:10). The DSC stands for Dynamic Stability Control (and is, importantly, different from Traction Control (TC). The DSC cuts in to reduce the risk of uncontrolled skids and is sensitive to wheelspin, vehicle orientation, pitch, yaw (when the back moves sideways in relation to the front), and engine RPM. When it senses a slide or excessive and unanticipated yaw, the DSC cuts the power from the engine and reduces throttle response (almost completely). For obvious reasons, when off-roading, yaw, pitch, slip, and slide are pretty-much par for the course -- and to permit this kind of work, the DSC can be switched off.

On Finn (and other affected vehicles), however, the DSC 'off' switch does not stay off, and cuts in when it senses too much wheelspin. This is not something that happens consistently, and it cannot be anticipated. When it does cut in, it cuts power from the engine and can cause a failed hill-climb, or loss of control. In a later video (https://youtu.be/Jv4nhLauUhY) repeated cutting in of the DSC caused a critical transmission failure which needed to be cleared by a code reader before the vehicle could be used again).
